Why Every Single Possession Matters - #DoHardThings

I'm a fan o' the man - the coach, Brad Stevens.  I've been a fan since his Butler days.  Amazing coach. An even more amazing story.

I first met Stevens at the DirectEmployers Conference in Indianapolis where his keynote emphasized "integrity" and a passion for living for something bigger than oneself. I stood in line to have my picture taken with him and I remember thinking, "Wow, this guy's a college coach and he's not much taller than me?"  : ) - he was also nice guy.  Intense, but nice.

In 1989 Butler University had 15 season ticket holders. 15.  I think our 2-A Van Alstyne Panthers had at least 16 that same year.  In 2000, Brad Stevens was a Marketing Associate at Eli Lilly making $44k/year.  In 2010, his Bulldogs, who could have been nicknamed "The Improbables," come within 3 inches of being the greatest basketball story ever told.  #BulldogNation swept the nation. Three years later, at the ripe 'ol age of 37 years, Stevens was tagged to become the new coach of the Boston Celtics.

Our recruiting team is awesome.  Everybody expects me to say that.  But it sure is nice to hear it from somebody else : )

The Technology HR Business Partners gave the TRANSFORMER Award to our Enterprise IT Recruiting team for some recent recruiting-awesomeness...and I think it's pretty cool - and certainly well-deserved.

You guys are my #OptimusPrime,

Dennis

You Lie (Recruiter) You Fry

...ok, not literally, and it's a good thing.  Because we'd likely have far less recruiters on this planet if the title of this post were true. But seriously, if you want a sure-fire way to improve candidate experience ... tell the truth.

For the candidate, closure is king.  Even if they don't get the job, good ol' honest closure will exponentially improve the "candidate-experience" (and I promise, there's data for that...somewhere).

Check out this article below by Kelly Blokijk who helps us understand why a "clear rejection is always better than a fake promise."  Always.

Candidate Experience:  Recruiters, Stop Making Excuses.

On #Attitudes and Electric Fences

My Oklahoma roots make me a big fan of the late Will Rogers. Rogers had a knack for putting things in perspective. He once said,
“There are three kinds of men: the ones that learn by reading; the few who learn by observation; and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence.”
In terms of your ability to recruit & hire top talent, which one are you?
One lesson I've learned in recruiting & Job search is this: The “nearly-perfect-often-elusive-candidate” is likely missing one ingredient. We're quite sure something is missing; we’re just unable to put our finger on it. We are quick to dismiss our uneasiness because the candidate seemingly provides the perfect technical fit. Afraid to miss the potential rock star, we pull the trigger. Sometime later, possibly while assessing the exit-interview results, a light goes off:#ATTITUDE.
Much has been written of the Southwest Airlines creed: hire for attitude, train for skill. Libby Sartain, former VP of the People Department at Southwest, once said,
“The ultimate employee is someone whose devotion to customer and company amounts to a sense of mission, a sense that ‘the cause’ comes before their own needs.”
In the same article, FastCompany asked Jose Colmenares (Southwest Recruiter) “What he’s looking for in a candidate?" You gotta love his answer:
“An attitude. A genuineness – a sense of what it takes to be one of us.”
Pat Riley talks about people afflicted with the “disease of me.” Diseased team members, Riley says, “…develop an overpowering belief in their own importance. Their actions virtually shout the claim, ‘I’m the one.” Riley asserts that the disease always has the same inevitable result: “The Defeat of Us.”
Are we doing all we can to avoid “The Defeat of Us?”
The secret ingredient should be a bit easier to detect these days, given our lessons learned and our first-hand observation of world-class recruiting organizations who are modeling it for us every day.
So, here’s to attitudes and electric-fences.
May we find our good share of the first and keep learning our lessons from the latter.

The LinkedIn Tidal Wave

It's hard to argue against LinkedIn's effectiveness with these kind of numbers.  And, when it's typically the first work-related site I access in the morning, and the last one I close out each night.

But really, only 50% of LinkedIn users have a completed profile?

Oh, I almost forgot my shameless plug - come visit me on LinkedIn (clicky-clicky HERE).

Four Attributes of a Great Recruiter

at-trib-ute [verb: uh-trib-yoot; noun: a-truh-byoot] - noun: something attributed as belonging to a person, thing, group, etc.; a quality, character, characteristic, or property. My buddy Griff recently gave me a book by David Thomas titled, Remember Why You Play (you can get the Kindle version HERE). I can't put it down.  It reminds me a lot of one of my other favorites - Do Hard Things (Alex / Brett Harris), which was also given to me by Griff (hmmm...I'm seeing a pattern here). The book details the life of a High School football coach, Kris Hogan, who leads the charge for the Faith Christian Lions of Grapevine, Texas.  I'm not giving out any spoilers here, but if you were born and raised in Texas, you surely understand this passion we call High School Football.  If you aren't a fan of the game, the book may not be for you.  But to quote David Thomas, if you love reading an "inspiring story about the power of second chances and the impact that simply believing in others can have on the human spirit", like me, you might not be able to lay this book down.

Recruiting Brains StayUp!

I've never met Christopher McCann. But I read his post called StayingUp! and I like him already. And while we might not share the same taste in music : ), we do share the same ideology when it comes to recruiting: attitude is everything.

If you don't think so, do a quick comparison of the most successful recruiters you know. My bet is that the majority have a killer attitude (as in, they get knocked down but they don't stay down). They claw their way back up in spite of what's going on around them. And they keep at it - keep at it - keep at it (David Perry's a perfect example and my constant source of encouragement).

McCann seems to be cut from the same cloth. And anybody that's been in this business (with the same company) as long as he has, is doing something right. In fact, he just might be a recruitingbrain.

You decide - check out his 10 ideas for Staying Up! that's posted on his blog (CMCSource).

You just might call him a recruitingbrain.

Recruiting Lessons from the Super Bowl

Dr. John Sullivan's article on ERE offers up some sound reminders for Recruiters (lessons to be learned from this year's Super Bowl).

I happen to love sports-related analogies, so his article was an easy score with me (oops, sorry 'bout that).  Anyway, it helps that his advice is right-on and provides a reminder for some of the reasons why the road from good to great in the NFL is paved with teams whose culture is able to withstand the "glaring criticism, transparency, metrics, and the performance cultures that are necessary in order to get teams to the Super Bowl."

Think it's glaringly different in the corporate world?  15 yard delay of game penalty for anybody who argues 'yes.'

Teams don't land in the Super Bowl by chance.

Ditto for recruiting teams worthy of playing in the Big One.

Roving Recruiter + Video Camera + Grad Students = Must See TV

I had the honor of speaking with a few graduate students tonight at DBU, invited by Professor Candy Hinkle (my long-time friend and consummate HR Professional).

We talked a lot about recruiting (in a web2.0 world), and the top 10 actions hiring managers can take to impact their quality of hire and cycle time in recruiting.

Everything was going just fine until we decided to have a bit of Q&A...

Big thank you to Professor Hinkle (Candy) for giving me the opportunity to share my passion with her students.

And, thanks also to the students for putting up with the camera-wielding recruiter, and for the thought-provoking discussion that ensued post-video!

Geico's Business Model

I heard a Geico ad on the radio a couple of months ago. It was short - sweet - memorable. In fact, I memorized the bullet points intending to put it in a post later that day (but forgot about it as soon as I got to work).

I haven't thought of Geico in 2 months! But I just saw a billboard and, bingo, remembered the ad (it's amazing how that works):

The Geico Business Model:

    • Save customers money
    • Provide exceptional service
    • Make it easy to obtain Geico online
    • Keep Geico's business model a secret
Now, either I waste too many brain cells hoarding useless minutia, or, Geico put together an ad that made a connection with me...it was easy to remember - and it made sense.

They want to save me money. Not a bad thing.

They want to give me excellent service. A very good thing.

They make it easy for me to find them. Also good, as most of us have the attention span of a...well...a blogger.

    Nice job Geico.

Now, maybe I can use the same kind of common sense to make a connection with a job-seeker.

    Let's see....
    1. I can't save them money, but I can potentially help them earn more money.
    2. I can deliver exceptional customer service.
    3. I can make it easy for them to find me online.
    4. Well, 3 out of 4's not so bad.
    Check out Geico's blog, HERE.
