Twitter Skews Young, LinkedIn Skews Old [graph]

The chart  below, from Statista.com, illustrates the age structure of social networks in the United States.

50% of Twitter's unique visitors in October 2013 were younger than 35 years, while 2/3 of LinkedIn's users were older than 35.

Facebook apparently appeals to people of all ages, but it still lags behind Linkedin with the gray hairs (um, yeah, that would be me).

One Does Not Simply Tweet Forth a New Job

I really dig social networks - esp Twitter. But I think it's silly when I hear someone say, "If you need a job, you need to get on Twitter." It doesn't happen overnight. Ok, rarely, if ever, does it happen overnight.

Why?  Because "One does not simply tweet forth a new job."

Getting a job takes work - and the work starts before one needs a job.

Futurecasting: Dave Mendoza (the R.C. Sproul of Big Data - Social Data API & CRM)

Our great friend and talent strategy consultant Dave Mendoza, is gaining some big-time popularity the past few weeks with the recent publishing of his new report: "Futurecasting." Working with Futurestep to create this report, Mendoza discusses the high impact concept that could transform the business of recruiting.

Ok, so Dave's no theologian, but he is writing the bible on Big Data, so you'll need to take this in small-chunks, re-reading to make sure you understand the implications of Social Data API and its impact on CRM (remember, huge quantities of data are only as good to your org as the info derived from the data...do you know what it's saying?).

Here's the link to FUTURECASTING (how the the rise of Big Social Data is set to transform the business of recruiting).  And here's a link to Mendoza's blog, Six Degrees from Dave, so you can get more of where that came from.

While you're at it, IBM's got a nice take on the same topic: ANALYTICS: real-world use of Big Data - not as animated as Mendoza, but it's a deep study that's worth your while.

Enjoy the reads - and if you get a hankering for more big data juice, tool on over to Twitter and give El Dave a follow (you'll be the better for it): http://www.twitter.com/davemendoza.

Am I The Sum of What I Tweet?

Nice reminder by FastCompany's Amber Mac regarding the importance of "personal brand" (which, by the way, never takes a vacation).

U R What U Tweet:  5 Steps to a Better Personal Brand

My favorite is #4:  Never Stop Networking (reminds me of something Dave would say).

And while I'm thinking of networking, hey, let's connect on LinkedIn (feel free to send me an invite:  smithtx@gmail.com).  ~ Dennis

Meet Brett Kopf: College Student | Jobsearch Brain

I met Brett Kopf today. On Twitter. Kopf is a senior at Michigan State and like many college students, he has a LinkedIn profile, a social network (that he created), and a blog.

What's different about Brett Kopf is that he's currently a Digital Media Intern @ MSU, and smart enough to have a Twitter account that he uses to connect with people like...me. No, not dorks, recruiters.

Brett piqued my interest so we exchanged a few tweets. I asked how he was approaching his job search in light of the recession and constant bad news about jobs for pending grads.

Brett's response: (reading from the bottom up)

That's good jobsearch advice - straight from the college student's mouth.

It's great to have a strong network. Brett and his peers certainly have a much stronger support network than most of us in our 40's. Brett, however, creatively sets himself apart by seeking out and connecting with the community of recruiters (generational diffs aside) currently engaged in the world of social media.

Smart move, Brett. We might have 20+ years of grey hair separating us, but we both certainly dig technology and know that tools like Twitter allow us to make connections with people (geography aside) that otherwise might be impossible.

My hat's off to Brett Kopf (jobsearchbrain). Reach out and connect with him on Twitter @BrettKopf while he's still in job-search mode.

I've got a hunch he's about to make a great hire post-MSU.

Expand Your Brand & Career. Open a Twitter Account.

Some people just have a knack for simplification.  Meet Dan Blank. I just read Dan's post about Twitter and believe that I've found no one better able to define its practical benefit.

Dan's post caught my attention immediately thanks to his opening line:
In this economy, the single most powerful thing you can do for your:
  • Career
  • Business/Brand
  • Industry
is to connect with others and help your industry connect with each other.

If you don't believe this then you most likely don't have a Twitter account either.

Too bad.

Dan thinks you should get one.  Right now.  I agree.

If you don't agree then you should at least read Dan's post (click HERE) so you tell him he's wrong.  Better yet, just open a Twitter account and send him a note (@danblank). I'm guessing by the time you read the article the tone of your email will change a bit.

I hope so.

Your career and personal brand have high hopes as well.  Don't disappoint them.
