Futurecasting: Dave Mendoza (the R.C. Sproul of Big Data - Social Data API & CRM)

Our great friend and talent strategy consultant Dave Mendoza, is gaining some big-time popularity the past few weeks with the recent publishing of his new report: "Futurecasting." Working with Futurestep to create this report, Mendoza discusses the high impact concept that could transform the business of recruiting.

Ok, so Dave's no theologian, but he is writing the bible on Big Data, so you'll need to take this in small-chunks, re-reading to make sure you understand the implications of Social Data API and its impact on CRM (remember, huge quantities of data are only as good to your org as the info derived from the data...do you know what it's saying?).

Here's the link to FUTURECASTING (how the the rise of Big Social Data is set to transform the business of recruiting).  And here's a link to Mendoza's blog, Six Degrees from Dave, so you can get more of where that came from.

While you're at it, IBM's got a nice take on the same topic: ANALYTICS: real-world use of Big Data - not as animated as Mendoza, but it's a deep study that's worth your while.

Enjoy the reads - and if you get a hankering for more big data juice, tool on over to Twitter and give El Dave a follow (you'll be the better for it): http://www.twitter.com/davemendoza.

Dave Mendoza Drills Down on Big Data, Social Data API & CRM

This is not a white paper that is quickly browsed - rather, it's read - absorbed - read again (with lots of note-taking) and absorbed some more.

And if you're smart, you'll do the same thing I did when you finish the last page.  Call Dave and ask lots of questions.

I was lucky enough to reach him - but with his travel schedule, I can only wish you luck.

If you get his v-mail, try him on Twitter:  @davemendoza

O Brother(s) Where Art Thou?

I joined my two older brothers on a cross-country trek this past week as we all piled in to the same  vehicle and ventured out to CA to honor our Grandmother at her memorial service (Grandma Ruth - we loved you deeply and miss you already).

Dan and Dave - it was the highlight of my life to hang out with you guys.  Although it was a quick trip, I enjoyed being crazy with you guys and getting some "real" time to just sit and talk.  I know we won't wait another 30 years before it happens again.

I love you guys - a younger brother never had it so good.

Dennis

*P.S. - VideoAlert:  this video has nothing to do with job search, so don't feel gypped if you waste 60 seconds in search of job-search tips only to see what happens when 3 brothers spend 48 hours packed in to the same vehicle.

2013 Engineering Grads Earn Top $$

source:  The National Association of Colleges and Employers via DirectEmployers.org

I've been recruiting engineers since 1997, when I first joined Sue Baker's team at AT&T Wireless (wow, those were the days....miss you Karen Chow and Candy Hinkle!).  Then, we couldn't hire RF Engineers fast enough (which is why I'm having deja vu all over again (thanks Yogi) with the number of Quality Engineers we're recruiting at SJM). But the main thing I remember about '97 is the cash engineers were making right out of college.

Fast forward 16 years and, yep, it's deja vu "all over again" for the 2013 grads.

The average starting salary for a new college graduate earning a bachelor’s degree is $44,928—up 5 percent over the average starting salary earned by members of the Class of 2012, according to the April 2013 Salary Survey, a new study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Starting salaries rose across the board, from 2 percent to almost 10 percent.

But guess who claimed seven of the top 10 spots among the highest paying majors for 2012-13?  Engineering grads.  Shocked, right?  Top honors for "average starting salaries" goes to:
  • Petroleum Engineering:  $93,500.  Cha-ching.
  • Computer Engineering:  $71,700
  • Chemical Engineering:  $67,600
  • Mechanical Engineering:  $64,000
  • Engineering Technology:  $62,200

Congrats to the class of 2013 ~ hoping that your hard work pays off from day 1.

3 Billion Job Searches Per Month? Indeed

Each month, visitors to the Indeed network perform over 3 billion job searches:  that's more than 1,000 searches every second.  Not shabby for a site that launched in 2003.  In fact, those numbers are almost as good as the traffic that flows through nextGreathire.com : )

Here's some interesting facts about a site that should be on your job-search radar:
