Chat your way to a new job, Part I

Great News! Myspace is not just a sign that the end is near! The site has been condemned as volunteering entirely too much information about potential candidates to be useful as a recruiting tool and has received a ton of bad press in general, but there’s no reason we can’t steal a popular technique most often used by it’s top bloggers: The instant message interview.

I’ve participated in quite a few of these interviews during my rapid rise and fall as a MySpace blogger (and I use “rise” loosely), and the interview (not the blog itself) was where I grew my blog traffic and got a chance to rub elbows with some of the sites best writers.

So the question begs to be raised, could this be a successful tool to facilitate REAL interviews? Could the phone screen potentially become obsolete? Years of experience, future goals, can you do X,Y,&Z, can you work with this type of boss? It seems so logical that the preliminary questions can be answered very quickly in a chat, without the hassle of fumbling with the pre-historic device called the telephone.

A Little Advice for Job Seekers: Remember to either change your handle name or create a new one if the one you currently use is anything that you wouldn’t want your mother to see.
