400,000 .mobi Domain Names Now Registered

DUBLIN, Ireland and WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire/ --

dotMobi, the company behind the first and only Internet address designed specifically for mobile phones, today announced more than 400,000 .mobi domains have been registered in 104 countries since the domain's launch in October 2006.

As a comparison, only 100,000 .com domain names were registered in the first ten years of that domain's existence. The growing number of .mobi registrations illustrates that content developers are focused on delivering quality sites and applications to mobile phones.

To help ensure quality mobile content, dotMobi has developed a number of initiatives to support and strengthen the developer community.

These initiatives include:

"The reality is the next generation of internet content is mobile,"
said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi.

"Today's consumers want good content anywhere, at any time. The numbers reflect the commitment developers have made to reach consumers using .mobi."
dotMobi is backed by leading mobile operators, network and device manufacturers, and internet content providers, including Ericsson, GSM Association, Hutchison 3, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, T-Mobile, Telefonica, TIM and Vodafone.

dotMobi is also a sponsor of W3C's Mobile Web Initiative.

2nd highest .Mobi sale gives hope to Obi-WanKenobi.Mobi

Jason Davis got me interested in buying domain names a year or so ago.

Oh, by the way, my wife wants to personally thank you, Jason.

If you see her coming, RUN!!!

Anyway, I own no domain names significant enough to one day get the five rug-rats through college. I've bought and sold enough to support my Starbucks habit (which can get rather pricey), but nothing to write home about.

I do, however, enjoy hearing a good story about those domain-nuts who happen to make a nice dime on the sale. And I found one today that's sure to keep my habit alive at least for another 3 months.

According to Ron Jackson of DNJournal.com, Flowers.mobi recently sold for $200,000. Nice cash for an unproven extension. Now, before you throw the "isolation theory" in my face, realize that it was backed up by another sale the same week: Sportsbook.mobi (which brought in $129,800).

Sweet-mother-of-all-domain-names.

I think both of those brought in just a little more than all of my domains sales combined (wink-wink).

Anyway, for those who care, here's a look at the complete Top 20 for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 14:

Like I said, it's just enough to keep the appetite whet.
