I've been recruiting engineers since 1997, when I first joined Sue Baker's team at AT&T Wireless (wow, those were the days....miss you Karen Chow and Candy Hinkle!). Then, we couldn't hire RF Engineers fast enough (which is why I'm having deja vu all over again (thanks Yogi) with the number of Quality Engineers we're recruiting at SJM). But the main thing I remember about '97 is the cash engineers were making right out of college.
Fast forward 16 years and, yep, it's deja vu "all over again" for the 2013 grads.
The average starting salary for a new college graduate earning a bachelor’s degree is $44,928—up 5 percent over the average starting salary earned by members of the Class of 2012, according to the April 2013 Salary Survey, a new study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Starting salaries rose across the board, from 2 percent to almost 10 percent.
But guess who claimed seven of the top 10 spots among the highest paying majors for 2012-13? Engineering grads. Shocked, right? Top honors for "average starting salaries" goes to:
- Petroleum Engineering: $93,500. Cha-ching.
- Computer Engineering: $71,700
- Chemical Engineering: $67,600
- Mechanical Engineering: $64,000
- Engineering Technology: $62,200
