New Hires: Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want?

You've done the hard work of recruiting and you've now get a signature on the dotted line.  The new hire starts next week, so you are busy getting things ready for the big day.  Are you interested in knowing what the new kid on the block really wants (besides not being called a kid)?

First, a stab at what's not a biggie:  less than 1% give a rats-behind about free food and perks.

Really?  I'll admit, that's sounds right-on for me, but then again, I'm not the new guy.  So, if they aren't in it for the pints of free frozen yogurt, what should be the focus of the on-boarding process such that it makes a giant impact on your new hire?

I'm glad you asked.

Here's what they want:

THEY WANT TO START DOING MEANINGFUL WORK,
AND THEY WANT TO DO IT ASAP.

Really?  That's sounds so boring, right?  One would think they'd just want to milk the easy schedule and ease in to things after imbibing in a few perks (Google-style).
