Ground breaking opportunity to help shape all technical aspects of Barnes & Noble.com’s mobile strategy. Position is in our NYC Headquarters, but we welcome professionals OPEN TO RELOCATION.

The Director, Mobile Applications will work closely with Product Managers and business owners while playing a key role in shaping Barnes & Noble’s mobile strategy. He/she will focus on “what” to build, “who” to partner with, and “how” best to implement a mobile strategy. Will report to the VP, Website Technology and lead a small team of Software Developers. Responsibilities include:

• Create a clear roadmap for Barnes and Noble’s mobile platform strategy; always emphasizing an enhancement of the customer experience and understanding the needs and growth of the mobile community.
• Define how to make Barnes & Noble’s offerings unique and competitive in the mobile marketplace.
• Responsibility for development and integration with 3rd party software and service providers.
• Work cross functionally in order to aggregate services from other parts of the organization including Barnes & Noble.com Merchandising, Ecommerce, Community, Advertising and Digital Media
• Communicate with both the technology/engineering and business development teams at Barnes & Noble to drive consensus and build confidence in the roadmap, deliverables and strategy. At a more granular level, collaborate with Barnes & Noble technology leadership around what platforms, tools, API’s, and SDK’s to employ.
• Lead and grow a new technical team.

Professional Background and Experience:

• 9+ years of experience in Ecommerce or large internet-based company or business unit with a high-volume, transactional web business. Must have experience over the last 3-5 years in mobile platform development with a keen understanding of the mobile technology space and mobile-based software technologies.
• Prior experience designing mobile sites/services for high scalability, reliability and flexibility. Experience in all phases of the software development lifecycle (i.e., analysis, design, development, testing, documentation and deployment).
• A Software Engineer by training with a comfort level writing and reviewing code (i.e., .NET, Java/J2EE) that has strong business experience with a focus on product management including responsibility for 3rd party contractors. Must work well cross functionally between technology and business teams.
• Must have a finger on the pulse of the Internet and Mobile industry including current trends and a strong idea of future consumer demand for mobile services.

• A creative thought leader with a track record of success implementing new ideas and new approaches to solve business problems.
• Outstanding execution skills. Must have the ability to operationalize strategic concepts including the ability to prioritize to ensure near-term deliverables.
• Prior experience managing other Software Developers and influencing other groups/departments within an organization. Must have a confidence-inspiring manner with the enthusiasm and leadership skills to invigorate a team with new ideas.
• BA/BS in Computer Science or other technical discipline. MA/MS or MBA a plus.

• Ability to adapt to problems with very little information.
• Strong intellectual capabilities. Must be comfortable in a culture that fosters debate, healthy conflict, collaboration and decisiveness.
• Solid technical aptitude. Be able to establish credibility with Barnes & Noble’s technical team.
• Genuinely curious about the evolution of the Mobile Web. Must be a user of current Web 2.0 tools such as social networking/media, widgets, etc.
• Positive personal presence. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
